Alfonso Valdivieso Sarmiento was the Attorney-General of Colombia from 1994 till 1997, succeeding Gustavo de Greiff.
Valdivieso was in midst of negotiating a peaceful surrender deal with the godfathers of the Cali cartel when the cartel kingpin Gilberto Rodríguez Orejuela was arrested in an unsanctioned joint DEA-Search Bloc covert operation. As a result, he felt that the arrest would jeopardize the talks, and requested the release of the godfather.
