Diego Murillo Bejarano, also known as Don Berna, was a Colombian drug trafficker and a high-ranking member of the AUC.
Don Berna started out as a guerilla fighter in his native Tulua Town for the local communist guerillas, however, after his group kidnapped an important medellin drug lord, his whole group was killed by sicarios sent by the narco trafficker's associates. And he was the only one able to escape the onslaught. In the late 70s, he got a job as a car washer for narco Fernando Galeano and his brother, and proved to be a very capable Enforcer and businessman. He was ambushed and shot in the leg in the late 70s by remnants of his previous group in an attempted hit, who labeled him a traitor for allying himself with narcotraffickers.
Prior to 1992, Berna served as the head of security for the Medellín cartel. After cartel leader Pablo Escobar killed his lieutenant and Berna's associate Gerardo Moncada, Berna broke away from the Medellín cartel along with Gerardo's wife Judy Moncada and her brother Jaime Mendoza. After Escobar executed Mendoza, Berna formed the Los Pepes death squad with Judy and the AUC paramilitary to hunt and kill Escobar. Berna served as the link between the Los Pepes and DEA agent Javier Peña, though the relationship was one-sided, favoring Berna.
Due to the actions of Los Pepes, Pablo went into hiding. Gilberto Rodríguez Orejuela invited the AUC paramilitary to join the cocaine trade, angering Judy. Judy planned on ratting out all members of the Los Pepes to the press, but later agreed to become an informant for the DEA after the AUC unsuccessfully tried to assassinate her. Berna however did not condone Judy's actions, and met with the leaders of the Cali cartel. With the Cali cartel's CIA connections, Berna forced Judy to become a CIA informant, and made her rat out DEA agent Javier Peña instead of the other narcotraffickers.
After Pablo Escobar's death in December 1993, Berna joined the AUC as a high ranking member to help with cocaine trafficking. He took over the remnants of Escobar's organization and became the new godfather of Medellín, making it one of the safest cities in Colombia. The next year, Peña asked for Berna's help to rescue Christina Jurado; who was held by FARC on the Cali cartel's orders. He agreed to do so, in exchange for striking his name on the DEA most wanted list.
It is implied his involvement in Carlos Castaño's death in 2004 in order to silence him because he was talking to the DEA in hopes in getting a new life in America.
He was arrested and extradited to United States in 2013
Personality
Don Berna is an affable, friendly, almost fatherly man to anyone he interacts with, like Peña, judy and the castaños, while still being a very cunning, dangerous and ruthless drug kingpin, unafraid of getting into gunfights and willing to torture escobar's men himself for information. After an attempted hit by former guerilla associates in his youth, Don berna becomes fiercely anti-communist and an active participant of the armed conflict in Colombia against radical leftists, waging brutal campaigns against them in Antioquia and medellin with the castaños and the AUC
