Javier Contreras was one of Rafael Caro Quintero's associates. He began informing DEA agent Enrique Camarena Salazar about Caro Quintero in exchange for money in the early 1980s. He was brutally beaten up by Mexican Police commander Guillermo Calderoni in order to extract the location of Caro Quintero, angering Camarena.
