Colonel Jose Luis Herrera was a colonel in the DAS (Departamento Administrativo de Seguridad). He was executed by Roberto Ramos in 1979.
In 1973, Herrera and his men stopped a convoy of trucks belonging to smuggler Pablo Escobar. Escobar scared the officers by identifying each one of them with their names, and also details of their immediate family members; and offered them a choice of money or lead. Herrera and his men were then paid $150,000 by Pablo Escobar to turn their attention away from his cocaine business.
Six years later, Escobar's disgruntled associate Mateo Moreno informed Herrera that Escobar sold cocaine for millions. Seeking a bigger cut, Herrera seized nearly 400 kilos of cocaine paste from the Medellín cartel. Enraged, Escobar stormed into his officer. Herrera arrested him, and took the infamous mugshot of Escobar. Escobar knew that Herrera did not find out the street value of cocaine on his own, and deduced that there was a traitor in his organization. He urged Herrera to give away the name of the traitor, so that he wouldn't have to split the cash from the seizure.
However, Escobar brought Moreno and Herrera to a field with other DAS officers, and had his men kill everyone after he personally executed Moreno.
