Juan García Abrego was a Mexican drug lord and a high ranking member of the Gulf Cartel.
García began his career under the tutelage of his uncle, veteran smuggler Juan Nepomuceno Guerra. In the mid 1980s, García saw potential in smuggling cocaine, but was hesitant to enter the business in fear of a rivalry with the Guadalajara Cartel. To his benefit, Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo of the Guadalajara cartel visited his uncle and requested an alliance in order to force the Cali Cartel into accepting his new "kilo per kilo" proposal. García convinced his uncle to accept the offer, but later betrayed Félix Gallardo by creating their own arrangement with Hélmer Herrera of the Cali Cartel. In retaliation for their betrayal, Félix Gallardo blew up Guerra's restaurant.
García Abrego became the leader of the Gulf Cartel after his uncle suffered a stroke in the early 1990s.
He was arrested in the middle of 1996 by the DEA after the Sinaloa Cartel took over the Gulf teritorry.
