Lopez was a DEA agent who investigated the Cali cartel till 1994.
Lopez acted as Duffy's translator. They attempted to use Andrés Restrepo to spy on the cartel, but he was caught and the identity of the DEA agents were revealed to the Colombian press by the cartel. The DEA decided to send Duffy and Lopez back home.
