Luis Carlos Galán Sarmiento (September 29, 1943–August 18, 1989) was a Colombian politician and the leader of the Nuevo Liberalismo who was assassinated by the Medellín cartel while running for presidency during the 1989 elections.
Galán was a left-wing politician, who supported the extradition treaty with the United States despite his campaign advisor César Gaviria's attempts to prevent him, as he felt that it would make him appear as an American puppet. Galán's support of extradition earned him the irk of the Colombian drug cartels, particularly the Medellín cartel led by Pablo Escobar.
When Escobar's attempts to buy and scare Galán were in vain, he sent his men to assassinate him during a rally. At the request of Luis' son, Gaviria took over the campaign and won the elections, and became Colombia's 18th President in 1990.
