In 1989, the LAPD and the DEA raided a warehouse located in Sylmar, California after receiving a tip off from a local resident and confiscated over 20 tons of cocaine with a street value of over $7 billion, and also found over $12 million U.S. dollars in cash, surpassing the Tranquilandia Raid as the largest seizure of cocaine in history.
The cocaine belonged to the Cali Cartel, and was delivered to them a few days before by smugglers employed by Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo. However, Félix Gallardo orchestrated the raid in order to weaken the Cali Cartel and force them to renegotiate the cost of the Guadalajara Cartel's smuggling services.
Historical inaccuracy[]
In real life, the raid happened five months after Félix Gallardo's arrest.
It goes to show we really don't know a gaaaat damm thing about the inner workings of the cartels.
